Fantasies
I'm super-afraid of failing at things. Also super afraid of creating things and people not being at least indifferent to it (assuming that 'dislike' is the negative side and 'like' is positive, 'indifferent' is the zero-point on my mental continuum of interest). That said I'll probably never find success in life by creating things. I make shit for myself and don't show anyone and secretly hope that conversations come up where I can mention it to someone that has already expressed that they might like it.
Hell the only reason I've been yammering here is because I figure in all the flotsam of the Web no one will really notice (though if I really feel good after I post I click the share button so the handful of people in my Google Circles get it popped up on the feed they probably forgot about).
Anyway, I was thinking about this fantasy I have. I call it a fantasy because the only way I could bring myself to even attempt it would be if I was in a condition that failure didn't *really* matter. And with an attitude like that I'll never be one of those people that made a killing by getting in on the ground floor of some untested-but-visionary technology that completely revolutionizes the way we do whatever. So money will always be an object and failure will always have consequences.
Anyway (again. see... this is a whole 'stream of consciousness thing, though because I have to type it's actually way more organized than what my internal dialogue usually sounds like), I would love to open a Gaming store. But not just a boring, "here's the rack of comics, here's the 40K display, here's a case full of CCGs and there's a table in back you can schedule" but a real community place that people would go to hang out. The sort of place that I would want to go hang out on Saturday with my daughter at.
It'd have to have tables. That's a given. A gaming store without gaming tables is just a place that sells nerd-stuff. This would be a place to serve the gaming community and promote positive growth of it. So some plain ol' folding-leg picnic table type things, and some bigger 4' by 5' (or whatever size they're supposed to be) wargaming tables, because you know those guys spend money. It's the 21st century, so there'd have to be some space devoted to PC gaming (not to say I don't want console gamers at my establishment, but it's been a long time since I've heard about console LAN-parties). I imagine initially it'd be like a 12 port switch and a bunch of desk space for folks to bring their own gear, but a handful of decent computers (maybe 'for rent', as in $5 gets you an hour of use or something) would be cool too. Again, this is a fantasy where money isn't even remotely a concern so these gaming tables and whatnot would be in individual rooms of some sort, purely for the purpose of limiting the noise between tables. Nothing's worse than trying to run D&D the same day there's a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament and losing your voice talking over hollerin' preteens and LoL players.
That all sounds pretty standard, yeah? well here's the real kicker. I like food. Other people like food. People that roleplay (stereo-typically) *really* like food. Every gaming shop/hangout should at least have snacks. "Jay's Dice-Shack" will have a restaurant attached to it. It'd be a comfort food sort of thing maybe: grilled cheese, chili, some inscrutable sort of soup, and sandwiches. Maybe a couple of kinds of rootbeer on tap. And a plump but good-natured cook with bushy eyebrows that sings a little off-key while he's cooking.
That's the kind of place I'd want: The exact sort of place that I'd hang out.
But hell, people probably don't even play in the stores anymore unless it's some sort of CCG tournament.
